Now is the time to help Million fund

WHILE many people’s attention has been focused on the unfolding developments in the global economy and, more recently, the collapse of Landsbanki Guernsey, another group has been concentrating on events much closer to home – completing the Alzheimer’s and dementia care unit at L’Aumone.
It was only in May of this year that the Bailiff was laying a foundation stone at Maison de Quetteville and another ceremony yesterday marked the topping out of the keynote building.
What has been remarkable about this project, which is supported by islanders through the Maison Million Appeal launched by the Guernsey Press, is the enthusiasm of all those involved to get the job done and get it done well.
The reason is that this is no ordinary project. Contractors, consultants and staff in all the trades and disciplines involved are well aware there is something special about what is being achieved and that has fostered a remarkable team spirit that means the work is now ahead of schedule despite the terrible summer weather.
It is hoped that the building will be handed over by Easter and available for use later in the year. While that represents an extraordinary effort by all concerned, the sad fact remains that there will be no shortage of islanders needing the care Maison de Quetteville will provide.
The number of people with Alzheimer’s and dementia is steadily increasing and will continue to do so until a cure is found, if such a thing exists.
In completing the topping out ceremony, Methodist Homes for the Aged chairman Paul Le Boutillier made a point of reminding people that not one penny of States money has gone into the project. He did so in part because so many people assume that since there is such a demand for the facility, it is just the sort of thing for the taxpayer to support. Alas not. Success depends on the board of the Methodist Homes for the Aged and its fundraisers – and the generosity of islanders.
With so many families touched by dementia and its effects, that generosity has been overwhelming, vital – and still necessary.
If anyone meaning to make a contribution has yet to get around to it, now is the time to do so.
