HEATHER WATSON has had to wait 24 hours for the chance to get her hands on a gold medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India.

Guernsey’s 16-year-old tennis sensation had comfortably taken care of home favourite and number two seed Poojashree Venkatesha in yesterday’s morning semi-finals of the women’s singles.

She was then due to face Kyra Shiroff after the Indian had taken care of Monika Wejnert of Australia 7-5, 2-6, 3-6 in the other semi. The tournament organisers had hoped to host the final yesterday afternoon, but international junior tennis regulations stipulate that players cannot play two singles matches in a day, so the match has been moved to today.

Watson was not the only Sarnian to shine at the Games yesterday.

Swimmer Robyn Le Friec (pictured) reached the final of the 200m butterfly when she clocked a personal best of 2min. 23.47sec., which is a phenomenal improvement of more than four seconds, in the heats.

In the final, Le Friec was drawn in the outside lane and was up against three Olympians – Amy Smith of Australia and England’s Jessica Dickons and Jemma Lowe.

Le Friec looked particularly strong over the last 50m and managed to grab sixth and set a new island record.  ‘I am absolutely thrilled,’ said Le Friec afterwards.
