Arson attack puts three in hospital

THREE people were hospitalised early yesterday after a spate of arson attacks in St Peter Port.

Kevin Davies, 47, and fiancee Tracey Enticott, 41, had to be rescued from their first-floor flat after a fire was started in the street-level doorway.

Their home, above the Sitar Indian Restaurant, was targeted just after 2am. Thick smoke filled Lower Vauvert and engulfed their flat. They had been alerted to the danger by their smoke detector.

They were assisted by the Fire and Rescue Service and treated at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital for smoke inhalation, as was a neighbour who had tried to help.

Police are treating the fire as arson after several other incidents nearby and within a short space of time. The first was reported at 2.05 and the last at 2.28am.

A car was set alight in Union Street, builders’ rubbish was found on fire in Allez Street and a scooter cover in Rue du Pre and a builder’s hoarding in Colborne Road were found burning.

The flat was blackened by smoke but the restaurant below was undamaged.

I do not doubt that the police will track down those responsible for these arson attacks and, once again, I suspect we shall find these incidents have been caused by out of control teenagers.

People could very easily have died in these arson attacks and I think the courts should throw the book at the perpetrators. If this was the action of delinquent youths they (and others) need to be taught that this was much more than mindless vandalism – this was attempted murder and should be treated as such by the authorites.
