TWO top island shooters have been winning international medals and breaking British records.

Tara Laine excelled at the Commonwealth Shooting Federation European Division Championships in Gibraltar, which is regarded as a mini Commonwealth Games.

A personal best of 546 ex 600 won the Sarnian gold in the women’s sport-pistol event. She had won silver a year earlier.

Laine, who usually shoots .22 pistol, also competed in her first air-pistol competition and was placed joint third with a creditable score of 359 ex 400 to move into the Olympic final.

Meanwhile, Nikki Trebert was delighted to shoot a new British record of 263 ex 300 in the 10m women’s standard air pistol at the British Pistol Championships in Bisley.

Her outstanding effort, shot with the late Adrian Breton’s pistol as her new gun had yet to arrive, saw her take first place ahead of GB squad member and previous record holder Caroline Brownlie.
