Twaite shad catches continue with heaviest yet

A THIRD twaite shad has been caught in the St Peter Port Harbour area. First it was Jay Ferbrache with his 1-9-5 specimen, the second was the 1-12-12 potential shore-caught record landed by Sam Robins and now it’s a 1-12-15 fish caught by Peter Rihoy.
Although it beats Robins’ catch, Rihoy’s fish will not challenge him for the record. The reason? It was caught from a vessel moored alongside and is therefore classed as a boat-caught fish.
It does not beat the boat record, which is a 1-14-4 fish landed by George Staples at Godine in February 1982. Rihoy caught his shad on a legered garfish strip and has entered it in the October Fish of the Month competition.
There was an amazing coincidence when young anglers David Dyson and Macauley Tulie entered their catches in the October FOM.
Both were ballan wrasse, both were weighed on the Record Committee’s scales and both were exactly the same, 4-11-1.
Dyson’s was caught at the White Rock on ragworm presented on paternoster tackle, while Tulie’s was landed at Saint’s Bay Harbour on legered lugworm. The two fish will be judged against the 8-10-13 shore record.
