THE final BAe146 flight took off from Guernsey yesterday.  The jet has been serving the island for many years, but on the final flight, only 18 of its 112 seats were filled.

Some passengers did not realise that it was the plane’s last trip.

‘We had no idea it was the last flight,’ said passenger Julie Cavey, who was travelling with her daughter, Danielle.  Despite the bad weather, they were not perturbed.

‘It doesn’t matter if it’s a bit bumpy,’ said Mrs Cavey. ‘Its nice to have a bit of excitement.’

Many of the passengers on the positioning flight were Flybe staff returning to the UK, so the fare-paying ones got to enjoy a near one-to-one service from the three cabin crew.

The plane was captained by Chris Unitt, who started flying it in 1995. He had 50 keyrings made for people involved with the final flight to commemorate the trip.

Ah – the 146, the aircraft that brought me such pleasure on my regular trips over the water.
I’ll never forget Captain Tim Osborne – I think he should have been flying in the summer of 1940 as he could do things with the 146 that defied belief sometimes.
The aircraft had such character with it’s stubby wings, little jet engines and the whining noise from the flaps as they extended / retracted.
FlyBe staff (in the early 2000′s) were really good fun and the service was superb back then.
Sadly being a licence holder I have had to ‘move on’ from the island, however the 146 will stay with me as an icon and represents all the things I loved about Guernsey, small, cute, fun, welcoming and with a bit of pinache.
Sadly it looks as though the 146 has headed the way Guernsey might be with the financial crisis.

This reinforces the debate that we need to lengthen the runway so that we can attract bigger aeroplanes that can carry bigger payloads then?
