TEENAGERS from Youth Alpha learnt at first hand at the weekend what life is like in the Third World. Around 30 of them aged 14 to 18 from the Christian youth group built slums and camped in them on Friday night.
They lived for 30 hours on a diet of lentils and rice to fully experience what millions live through on a daily basis. Youth leaders Tim Langlois and Rob Girard, from Shiloh Church, organised the event for the second year.
‘It’s to give them the experience of living without modern technology, limited food and one set of clothes,’ said Mr Langlois .
‘It’s to show them how a billion spend a lifetime. ‘It’s awareness and just to give them the feeling they are doing something to help as well.’
The camp raised around £800 for Soul Action, a charity for street children.

Voice For Victims
Voice for Victims is a campaign aimed at promoting the rights of those affected by child sexual abuse.
I think 30 days would have made these youngsters realise just how lucky they really are. They would definately appreciate what they have got when they returned to their good old lifestyles.

Paul, at least these youngsters did something and raised a decent sum of money in the process. Who knows, this brief experience may also help stimulate further charitable work later on in life? That’s more than can be said for armchair critics who are content to criticise whilst doing precious little themselves.
Considering Guernsey youth have such a bad reputation (sometimes deserved, sometimes not) I think this is a commendable story.

Very good point of view. I was just trying to state that a lot of kids don’t know they are born nowadays. I was not trying to take anything away from what they have achieved.
