Sub-RPI share of milk price hike disappoints the retailers

0506270.jpgMILKMEN are disappointed with their latest pay increase. A litre of milk will go up by 10p to 98p on 7 December but milkmen will get only 0.73p of it.

The 3.6% rise takes their margin on doorstep deliveries from 20.52p per litre to 21.25.

‘We are appreciative to have received an increase but a little disappointed considering it is well below RPI,’ said Guernsey Milk Retailers’ Association president Jason Piriou.

‘However, our main priority at the moment is to address the worrying and far-reaching proposals going before the House this week.’

Of the remainder of the increase, 5.5p goes to farmers and 3.77p to the Dairy.

But in its letter to States members, Commerce and Employment said the Dairy would retain only 2.5p of its rise. This was because it had to budget to buy 8.1m. litres of raw milk but its sales of liquid milk were only 6.5m.
