LAUREN HURFORD and Derek Tomlin have come up against the top bowlers in Europe. As the Guernsey Open Championships winners, they were the island’s representatives last week at the 31st European Champions’ Cup in Duisburg, Germany.
Both Sarnians have had experience of international tournaments, with Tomlin having the greater.
The tournament consisted of three preliminary rounds of eight games, with the top eight of each section going through to the finals.
After the first round, Hurford (pictured) was in 13th place of 39 entrants with an average of 195.75, although after round two she slipped to 19th, averaging 189.31, finishing in a respectable 27th position with a final average of 183.67.
Tomlin found himself in 27th position of 42 male entrants after round one with an average of 180.50, pulling up to 25th after round two with an average of 189.88 and finishing 24th with a final average of 193.04.
Considering the Sarnian bowlers were competing in a totally different environment and conditions, their performances were creditable and Guernsey will once again be represented at next year’s event.
