‘End of dairy industry’

Friday 31st October 2008, 2:29PM GMT.

0658437.jpgDEPUTIES were told yesterday to mark Wednesday in their diary as the day that they pressed the button on the demise of the dairy industry.

The warning came in a powerful speech by Dave Jones (pictured) which at times had members tutting and groaning.

He had seconded the Lowe amendment to give milk retailers total exclusivity on delivering milk products, which was overwhelmingly defeated on Wednesday.

‘I heard much yesterday about shackling the Dairy and how keeping what we have always had will somehow prevent the Dairy from becoming more efficient. What utter rot.

‘The Dairy is inefficient because of a catalogue of bad management, not because of the milk retailers.’

He said the collapse would not happen tomorrow or the next day.

‘It will be a slow lingering death of an industry that has been in Guernsey for over a thousand years and its last death throws will have started on your watch. You will be the group of elected deputies the public will hold responsible.’

We need more people like you in the states. An ordinary man looking to safeguard the interests of the local people rather than putting efforts and energy into the mega rich as a way to dodge the inevitable. The above media does not surprie me in the least. It is all to easy to criticise our states but it appears that they get worse every time. Are we going to be left with a poverty ridden island with little going for it? Maybe Lyndon Trott will be able to spend 5 star luxury time in Russia or Italy and encourage MAFIA money to be invested as a way to ride things out.

Mind you it certainly distracts from the state of housing in the island, doesn’t it Mr Jones

It amazes me that we have, arguably, some of the best dairy products in the world and yet we cannot sustain our dairy industry. I have to agree with Dave Jones that poor management must be atthe root of the problem.

We should be exporting Guernsey butter, cheese and cream not looking at ways of importing inferior milk from elsewhere.

What I feel the dairy industry needs is better marketing. When I was a kid there was a cafe within our market where kids could be left and supervised by what were respected members of staff that served mikshakes, Guernsey Gauche with local butter, and thrived on what our local Dairy provided at that time. Our parents could go about their business in town safely in the knowledge that their children were being well supervised by people that can be trusted. Maybe something like this could be re-instated so that it is profitable and uses one of the finest products that we have at our disposal.

I have done more for social housing in this island than any other head of that department in 30 years, so much so that at the last election housing wasn’t even an election issue, how different from a few years ago when it was top of the political agenda.
