IT WAS the harsh lesson of make sure your chances count, for Guernsey on Saturday.
This was undoubtedly one of those occasions when a draw would have been a fair result for two sides who put their all into a game, defending like demons and showing a decent amount of quality considering the appalling conditions.
But Guernsey coach Jordan Reynalds hit the nail on the head when he pointed out that his side had not utilised the advantage of the strong wind at their backs in the first half.
‘The only game I have seen conditions as bad over here was when we played London Irish Amateur last season,’ he said.
‘On that day we scored 30 points with the wind in the first half and none in the second, but we didn’t have to because we already had enough.
‘We did not build up a big enough gap today and I felt some of our decision-making at times in the first half was off. We were taking the ball up into the tackle on halfway when we should have been kicking it deep.’
He was spot on.
Not enough time was spent by Guernsey inside the Tottonians 22 when they had the elements in their favour and to not score a try in the opening period was severely disappointing.
