‘Local’ Americans also had their say

AMERICA yesterday elected its 44th president and for the first time chose a black man for the top job.

And US expatriates living in Guernsey were following events keenly yesterday. Mark Laws, 27, a personal trainer, voted for Democrat Barack Obama using an overseas ballot.

‘He has a lot of good ideas for the economy and he just comes across as really genuine compared to other candidates I’ve seen in the past. He has strong opinions, especially coming from a different generation to McCain – it’s about change.’

Mr Laws added that Obama was popular around the world.

‘He has also got a lot of people who have never voted before. They are coming out and voting and that’s good, making America much more conscious of politics.’

Mr Laws grew up in New Mexico. He moved to Guernsey just over a year ago, having lived in the UK for about five years.

We appear to have congratulated this man into the postion which he is in through non other than a democratic process. But the sad and racist in some wish to snatch back his glory. Strange! Happily give with one hand and immedaitely snatch back with the other! What I find stranger is the fact that those feeling that he is lucky to be where is, given the colour of his skin tend to be the same but feed on bitter sour grapes. The public put him where is so those that are bitter my note to you is jealousy gets you nowhere.

Have you got a positive bone in your body ?

You say ‘the public put him ( Obama ) where he is so those that are bitter my note to you is jealousy gets you nowhere’

Have you ever considered applying that thought to our local politicians ?

My opinion which I am entitled to by the way. I am only calling it how I see it actually! Maybe you will stop being upbeat when everything is gone then? Maybe wake up one morning and reality will kick in maybe? Do I believe we are receiving a good deal. Absolutely not but I know a man that is!
