THE Princess Royal Centre for the Performing Arts was filled with people last night recognising the work of Guernsey’s youth.

The Celebration of Achievement Young People’s Awards asked islanders to nominate worthy people aged between 11 and 25 for recognition. Eleven young people were shortlisted and four were awarded the top prize in their category.

Gary Truffitt won the Bobby Le Vasseur memorial award for dedicated service.

It was second time lucky for Jon Brown, who was nominated in last year’s awards. He collected the Jan Renouf award for an outstanding contribution to the community.

Competition for the triumph over adversity award was so tight that judges decided on Kyle Merrien and Verity Tongs as joint winners.

Bailiff Geoffrey Rowland presented the awards and felt the evening was a great way to recognise the achievements of youth.

‘The people here tonight are role models for what young people can achieve in our community,’ he said. ‘The winners tonight are just the tip of the iceberg. Young people in Guernsey are always challenging themselves and developing life skills.’
