Allowance rise a big surprise

0531753.jpgPREPARED against a backdrop of financial uncertainty, the 2009 Budget has thrown up some surprises, according to Fran Snoding, a director of Fortis Reads Private Clients.

‘There are the usual, albeit slightly lower than predicted, increases in duty on tobacco, alcohol and fuel, as well as property taxes where there will be an increase in tax on real property of 5.5% for domestic households, a proposed 25% for offices and 50% for office and ancillary accommodation occupied by the financial services industry.

‘However, what was not expected was Treasury and Resources’ decision to go back on the 2008 Budget plan to freeze personal income tax allowances and actually increase the amount for a single person by RPI to £8,700 for 2009, with a proposal to further increase this by 4% for 2010.’

Mr Snoding (pictured) said this move would be a welcome boost to taxpayers.

Another proposal he thinks will find favour, but this time with States members, is the move that has been made to abolish dwelling profit tax.

Anything what has been handed to us will actually be taken away again when we see the next bright ideas to raise more revenue. How long will it be before paid parking is back in the arena then? A toilet tax might be worth exploring at a tenner a flusth it might be the answer to our thoughts?

Has everyone forgotten the original reason for the introduction of DPT. The fact that so little income has been raised by this tax demonstrates that it has succeeded in deterring the “get rich quick” property investors.
