ON THE 90th anniversary of the ending of the First World War islanders yesterday remembered the men and women killed serving their country in all conflicts.
Among those laying wreaths at the Remembrance Sunday service at the War Memorial at the top of Smith Street was Mark Dryden, a lance corporal during the Iraq conflict in 2005.
During the 31-year-old’s second tour in the country, his vehicle was caught in a roadside bomb explosion.
His comrade and friend sat alongside him was killed. Mr Dryden lost his right arm and part of his left hand.
‘A lot of people say we are heroes, but I don’t class myself as a hero. I was just doing my job,’ said Mr Dryden.
He was in Guernsey accepting a cheque on behalf of charity Help for Heroes, which was presented by the Combined Services.
The charity was founded a year ago to support injured servicemen and women. To date it has raised £12.5m. through means including a chart-topping song by X Factor finalists.
