French deal turns tide in Alderney

PLANS to speed up Alderney’s tidal power project have been given the green light.
A disagreement between the Alderney Commission for Renewable Energy and developer Alderney Renewable Energy had threatened to derail the latest proposals.
However, the two bodies put pen to paper on a new deal – which includes the scrapping of next year’s pilot project – just minutes before last night’s States meeting.
Six of the island’s 10 States members voted in favour of the scheme, which should lead to electricity being generated in Alderney waters two years earlier than planned. Richard Willmott, Colin Williams, Liz Bennett, Ian Tugby, Tony Llewellyn and Bill Walden all voted in favour, while Barbara Benfield, Lin Maurice and Barry Pengilley abstained.
Frank Dean (pictured) was the only member to vote against the proposal and he resigned immediately after the meeting. He said the matter had not been introduced properly.
‘My resignation is not because I oppose tidal energy – I emphatically do not. An opportunity to promote any project of value to the economy should be evaluated and introduced via a normal and thorough political process. It is clearly demonstrated that this has not been the case and for a project of such magnitude and importance, the lack of information and the flow of ever-changing information at this late date offers us no credit.’

It would appear that we will follow in Alderneys lead from this. Good luck to them. When we start to appreciate what this resource is doing for them as well as us we will sit up and take note. Just a shame we did not have the foresight to jump on this as quickly as they have. Maybe once we start to generate enough to export elsewhere it will be back to China to flog off crabon credits at a premium. What a coup eh CM. Rather offsets the whole agenda in the first place though!
Lets not sell this off just because we don’t understand the technology. It is ours and we need to preserve it because this is going to do us more good than any industry ever has! WE have our cable link in place already. Instead of it being a one way process we will be able to reverse it in a few years? This is down to us though! It should be at the top of all of our wishlists especially for our children!

Looks like Frank Dean went before e was not re-elected!!! Feelings were running high about him after the chickens were so cruelly killed!!!!!

Aye Dragonfly, maybe he thought the headline ‘Politcian resigns coz he didn’t get his own way’ was far less humiliating than ‘Politician receives no votes in general election!!’
The spirit of dead chickens work in mysterious ways…..
May he enjoy a long and happy retirement and NEVER return to politics!!!

Exactly, he underestimated the spirit of those chickens.
I dont know any one that was going to vote for him. Its like he did this out of spite and to prove what he could do.
I hope we get some reply to the letter in the Ald Journal asking were the “pest controllers” from Guernsey in possession of work permits and how much it cost to bring them to Ald AND how much they were paid.
Did Frank Dean get this through the States all by himself. There were others in the States presumably that voted for this action. Who were they?????
