FENCING is becoming more and more popular in Guernsey and, judging by the excellent performances from the Sarnia Sword Club in the 37th annual team match against the Royal Navy, standards are improving.
The Sarnia Sword Club fencers stormed to victory, winning seven team matches to three, making this four winning years in a row.
‘Fencing is mainly an individual sport, but with team competitions against the Navy elite such as this, competing together as a team truly brings out the best in the local fencers,’ said SSC’s team captain Ross Martel, who was overjoyed by the result.
The series of fights took place over two days with 10 matches counting towards the overall score.
Three individuals make up a team for each weapon – foil, epee and sabre – with each fencer meeting their rivals on a round-robin basis and the match being won by a team reaching 45 hits.
