GUERNSEY’S junior players dominated the Channel Islands Championships in Jersey at the weekend, taking all the titles from mixed U-11 through to the U-19.
In an individual event to determine the CI champion in each age group, the Guernsey juniors knocked out all the Jersey players in the preliminary rounds to reach the final, scarcely dropping any games in the process.
‘This was a fantastic achievement. Our juniors are now very strong, as a result of such a successful development programme which has been in place for several years. This is now clearly paying off,’ said Ben Rosec, director of island squash.
The first title to be decided was the boys’ U-17 final with Harry Martel and Jonny Laws.
Laws, having burnt himself out in the semi-final, failed to find renewed energy with Martel, who won the title in straight sets.
Gareth Banton knocked out the number two seed, Max Tupper, in the semi-final of the boys’ U-15, to then come up against number one seed Jack Tacon.
