LAST YEAR was close but it looks set to be even more so this year.
The 2007-08 Yorkshire Guernsey Men’s Division One went right down to the wire with three teams – Collins Stewart, Collins Stewart Inferno and Le Mont Saint Subaru – all in the mix to the end. Collins Stewart came out victorious.
However, this year has seen a number of exciting players come into the league and the one team, besides the island under-21s, not to challenge last season, Le Mont Saint Fiat, have been strengthened by some of Subaru’s stars.
Subaru are now called Le Mont Saint and their player-coach, Pete Beausire, who is also the Guernsey Basketball Association secretary, is looking forward to when the 2008-09 campaign starts tomorrow at Beau Sejour.
Fiat are taking on Inferno at 6.05pm, followed by Collins Stewart and Le Mont Saint at 7.20.
‘It’s going to be a crazy year,’ said Beausire. ‘The way we split our Le Mont Saint sides, we wanted two even teams to go for the title. That’s what we set out to do last year but Fiat’s injuries meant that it didn’t work out that way.’
