Repeat of sewage leak ‘is unlikely’

Properties at Dunnington Court were flooded with sewage in August.
THERE is little chance of a repeat of August’s incident when sewage flooded some islanders’ garages and had to be discharged through emergency outfalls, according to a report.
Public Services’ document details the causes of a major leak on Sunday 3 August which resulted in the Belle Greve pumping station being out of action for nearly two weeks.
It also highlights how prompt action overnight by staff from the department, States Works, contractor Trant and the Fire & Rescue Service prevented homes from being flooded.
It concludes that the incident was the result of a number of factors which could have occurred at any time since the pumping station was built nearly 40 years ago.
However, improvements to the island’s wastewater disposal facilities, including the completion of a new auxiliary pumping station that was under construction at the time, mean it is unlikely to happen again.
