THE future of the island was placed in the hands of its youth yesterday.

As part of the Guernsey Tomorrow initiative, Grammar School and College of Further Education students were asked what they would like the island to be like in years to come.

Grammar student Tom Finnerty, 16, said asking his generation to contribute was a step in the right direction.

‘It’s great that the politicians and decision-makers have come to us – people our age don’t always feel they can take their ideas to leaders and be listened to, but because they asked we have taken an interest and felt some responsibility for our home,’ he said.

He said the most positive thing about the experience was seeing how interested people were in island matters.

‘Considering these political issues gives you a bigger view of how the island works. It stops life just being school and home,’ he said.
