We don’t need a runway extension, say airport users

AIRPORT users are all against extending the runway.
Users’ committee chairman Dudley Jehan said members were in agreement that lengthening the runway from its current 1,463 metres to 1,700 would be a waste.
‘All members are agreed that to extend the runway would be a bad use of money.’
It would cost a lot and be of minimal benefit to the island, he said. ‘It would not be a good investment – the unknown sums of money on top of runway repair are unknown and could reach £30m. and it would not be of value to the island.’
Aurigny managing director Malcolm Hart (pictured), who sits on the committee, said all airlines were in agreement on the matter.
‘It would cost tens of millions and achieve nothing. The committee features our fellow airlines, aero club people, corporate jet people, Airport Services Guernsey and other hangar operators and we are unanimous that no taxpayers’ money should be spent on extending the runway,’ he said.
‘Flybe, Blue Islands, you name it – nobody here sees any value in spending so much for nothing.’

Finally, some common sense regarding the airport runway and this coming from a body whose opinion we should listen to.
Even if we could afford it (which we cannot), the timing is awful and it does not make any business sense; not to mention the environmental impact on a rapidly diminishing rural Guernsey. Finally, an extra £30m today will be at least £60m by the time it is completed with the now standard States overspends.
I think we can all accept that the runway is in need of repair, but let’s not get carried away by delusions of grandeur.

It’s been said that an even longer runway is needed at Heathrow in order for the economy to take off.
