JACOB SIDEBOTTOM was the pick of the 12-strong Guernsey Yacht Club junior contingent of Optimists at the Volvo Musto end-of-season championship meeting.
The event at the Rutland Water Sailing Club qualifies as the final ranking one of the Optimist year, the top sailors being offered places in much sought after training in various Royal Yachting Association squads over the winter.
Sidebottom ultimately finished overall fifth in the regatta fleet and was among the medals, receiving his trophy from double Olympic silver medallist, the 470 sailor Nick Rogers.
The event was held over two days and the breezes were generally a little too light for the Sarnian sailors. On day one, conditions at the start were a south-westerly 10 knots under a bright sky and in warm sunshine.
The first races were disappointing for the 10-strong Sarnian main fleet sailors, who competed in fleet sizes of 110 boats in the 220-boat competition.
