Island defends suggestion it hindered rail plan

AUTHORITIES in Sark have denied using underhand tactics to hinder a proposal to build a funicular railway on the island’s Harbour Hill.

The proposal is outlined in A Manifesto for Sark, a document issued by Brecqhou owners Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay in the run-up to Sark’s first general election.

But in the latest edition of Sark News, approved by Sir David Barclay, it is claimed that ownership of a piece of land had been transferred to the island of Sark as soon as those opposed to the idea had got to hear about it.

The Barclays’ advocate, Gordon Dawes, said a suggestion had been made that the land had been ceded intentionally to thwart the railway project.

‘It seemed that no sooner had Brecqhou made the idea known than that land was transferred,’ he said.

‘However, it may just have been a coincidence and, of course, there is nothing at all to prevent the Island Trustees from working with Brecqhou on this project. It would be a proper use of that land and in the public interest.’

Can you believe that the Barclays put out a manifesto for Sark and yet they cannot be bothered to even get on the electoral role.Is that democratic?

A funicular going up harbour hill is an interesting idea although hardly worth it as the hill is not as steep as the mountains of Bergen! What worries me the most is if any part of the idea is financed by Brecquou and someone is caught drinking on the train or doing anything Brecquou does not like the plug will be pulled and Brecquou will sue!

It seems as though lots of people are jealous of the Barclay Twins. They have lots of money. Good for them they have earn’t it. A lot of their time is spent helping others less fortunate than themselves. Most of us actually are.

If it was a life and death situation we could count on them to come to any of our rescues.

A meassage to the negative jealous people. Look at all the good that these people do and continue to do without promotion then comment again. It is nice to have lots of money but when it is spent in a nice way it tends to be even nicer.

Do the Barclay twins seem such nice people now? Following a democratic election, which they have been fighting for but which did not result as they wished, resulted in them immediately shutting any businesses they owned and making several hundred people redundant.

    What price democracy?
