‘The Flying Pig’ recounts some very fond memories

IF THERE is one story among the many that sums up the sporting career of Mike Vaudin (pictured) as well as any, it is the time he was challenged to a game of pool by football legend George Best.
The occasion was Fulham’s visit to Guernsey, or more precisely the post-match drinks at the Queen’s Hotel. It wasn’t the longest match of all time. Best broke and with his first shot Vaudin inadvertently potted the black to end the match.
It gives an insight into the sort of character he is that many of the memories he has put into print are tales against himself.
The Best incident is one of literally hundreds in his new book, Do Pigs Fly? Tales of a Sportsman. The title? Well, anyone who knows him will know that he has rejoiced in the name of The Flying Pig since it was given to him by Irish centre forward and joker Andy McMillan and, unfortunately for Vaudin, it stuck.
Let’s get one thing straight, the book is not an autobiography.
Rather it is a collection of reminiscences of people he has played with, refereed or watched and major sporting events he has attended.
