Woolworths would be sadly missed

Thursday 27th November 2008, 2:29PM GMT.

0677063.jpgTHE future of Woolworths’ Guernsey branch and its employees has been cast into doubt.

The high street retail giant has suspended trading in its shares and yesterday called in administrators from Deloitte.

A spokesman refused to talk about the Guernsey branch specifically, but said it was no different to any other. ‘It applies across the whole Woolworths Group, absolutely. Woolworths in Guernsey is one of our stores.’

Local staff did not wish to comment but money is said to have been ring-fenced to pay the 30,000 British workers as usual tomorrow.

BBC business editor Robert Peston caused concern earlier this week by saying he thought up to 20,000 jobs at Woolworths were now at risk, whatever the outcome for the firm. The company is also in talks to sell its 40% stake in publisher 2 Entertain to the BBC, which already owns the other 60%.

Local shoppers such as secretary Sharon Duarte said they would hate to see the Guernsey branch go.

It would be a terrible pity if Woolworths was to go. It always has exactly what I am looking for and is very popular, every time I shop there it is heaving with customers.

Not for me it wouldn’t. The whole group has been dragging one leg behind itself for years.

nice shop – a proper institution but i’m sorry – the last few times I have been in there the service has been beyond a joke – its not really surprising if all of the other shops have the same standards of customer service & staff attitude!!

A big shame to see it go though…

Woolworths sells a lot of bottom of the market junk in my opinion. The one decent thing that it does offer is the pick n mix.

However this does not profit a large store enough to keep it open. It has lacked investment and foresight for a long time. The staff also lack respect and most are switched off at the best of times.

Lots of shops in town will close. It is the nature of todays shoppers that dictate this. If they can’t compete with web traders then what right do they have to complain?

Our local shops are very expensive even in comparison to the UK where VAT is added. Better deals can always be found elsewhere.

Paid parking will see many more driven out of business. Then we will probably be taxed by our postal service to provide us with what we need.
