‘Chief Pleas will decide’
Wednesday 3rd December 2008, 2:29PM GMT.
SARK Seneschal Reg Guille (pictured) says it will be up to the new Chief Pleas to decide the future of his position.
A Court of Appeal ruling in London yesterday said his dual role as president of Chief Pleas and senior judge was not human rights-compliant.
But it was not the end of Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay’s challenge to Sark’s reform laws, with both they and the Secretary of State for Justice likely to take it to a higher court.
Mr Guille said that, as Seneschal, he was bound not to speak on political issues.
But he added that only one of the five aspects of the appeal had been upheld by the three judges.
‘Decisions on the future role of the Seneschal must be left to those elected by the people of Sark in the forthcoming election of 28 conseillers,’ said Mr Guille.
‘All that I have to say is, of course, subject to any petitions made to the House of Lords by any of the parties on any of the judgement rulings.’
