Recycling requete is last resort

0662970.jpgKERBSIDE recycling’s future will be decided by the States if Public Services does not change its plan to scrap it.

Former Environment minister David De Lisle (pictured), who was behind moves to set a 50% recycling target, will press current minister Bernard Flouquet on the issue with questions at the next States meeting.

‘I’m totally devastated by the news,’ said Deputy De Lisle. ‘The trials were going well. People were asking for it in their parishes, in Town and St Peter’s, for it parish-wide. People feel let down.’

He will lay a requete if Deputy Flouquet does not say next week that the decision will be reconsidered.

‘The announcement has taken me and others by surprise,’ said Deputy De Lisle. ‘It gives little notice until cut-off at the end of this month. It is a regressive step, particularly after the announcement in August that with kerbside collections of dry recyclables recycling would reach 46% and with food waste collection we could progress to 61%.

‘The problem is simply how the department can possibly comply with the resolution of the States and the will of the people without kerbside collection.’

Another example of our forward-thinking local government representatives.

We can always fall back on our other waste solutions…. oh, we don’t have any.

Keep those heads in the sand and the problem might just go away.

It was withdrawn because it was too expensive. What’s wrong with that?

It would be interesting to see the numbers. When those powerful people eventually get their massive mass incinerator generating revenue for the few whilst costing the tax payer a fortune, then maybe we’ll rue the chance of not having thought through the problems of a simple kerbside scheme that many, many places seem to able to achieve. We are backward and your constant “what’s the problem” typifies the inertia that is blighting modern Guernsey.

We rush to implement legislation to help the banks but nothing to help the people.

A measured and well thought out response – Jackie has a great deal to learn from you as a clearly independent thinker.
