Sitting members ousted
Monday 8th December 2008, 2:29PM GMT.
TWO of the sitting members were ousted and the final place was decided by a draw of lots in a dramatic Alderney election.
Barry Pengilley and Lin Maurice could finish only seventh and eighth of the 10 candidates. But the other sitting member who stood, Bill Walden (pictured), was successful.
The poll-topper was election newcomer Peter Allen and he will be joined in the States next year by fellow first-timers Boyd Kelly, Geoffrey Sargent and John Beaman.
It was Mr Beaman’s election that caused controversy. He finished in joint fifth place after polling the same number of votes as Don Oakden.
A tie, which is thought to be unprecedented in the island’s political history, led to returning officer David Jeremiah picking the winning candidate’s name from a ballot box.

Only in Alderney……………… would an election be decided by pulling names out of hat !!! . Not a fair way to do it. A by-election should have been called. I voted for the loosing candidate who polled the same amount of votes that he “winner” did. Raffle ticket poliction. Mr.Beaman should step down and fight another election with Mr.Oakden.
