BALLAN wrasse dominated the Northern Trust Fur and Feather competition, organised by the Guernsey Sea Anglers Club.

The prize for the best fish of the day went to Andy Le Lerre for a 5-5-11 ballan wrasse.

The award for the heaviest bag was won by Tony Merrien. His 13 ballan wrasse for 42-4-0 was the third-heaviest weight in the history of the competition. He could hardly carry all his winning items of Christmas fare because he also won a second major prize, his 5-1-6 ballan wrasse being the third best fish of the day.

John Hatton had the second-heaviest bag, 12 ballans for 28-8-0, John Davey was third with seven for 21-10-0, while fourth place went to Roger Robinson who had eight for 21-7-0.

The top catch by a female angler was landed by Lynn Roberts who brought six garfish for 3-11-0 to the scales.

Young angler Callum McLaren won two major awards. He had the heaviest bag by a junior – 13 garfish and one lesser-spotted dogfish – and also the best fish by a junior, his dogfish of 1-8-5.

Steve Huxster prevented a clean sweep of ballan wrasse taking all the top prizes for his 1-10-5 lesser-spotted dogfish which gave him the second prize in the best fish category.
