‘Bury the hatchet – for Sark’s sake’

0687052.jpgTHE message from voters yesterday was for Sark’s new Chief Pleas to put divisions aside and work together.

Electors were yesterday relishing the opportunity to choose for the first time all the political members of Chief Pleas.

Robert Knight, 26 (pictured), was born in the island.  ‘Hopefully this is what Sark needs,’ he said.

‘I believe it’s an opportunity for the working class man and all residents to improve the island. Hopefully, Sark can get good industry and tourism but keep what makes it special.’

Mr Knight works for the Sark Building Company. ‘It’s very important to be able to vote for Chief Pleas. In the past, I don’t believe the working man has had enough say in how Sark is run. The more input by the people the better.’

It was important to offer the children a future when they left school. ‘In the past there’s been jobs, but a lot of my friends have moved away because there’s not much for them to do.’

He said there had been a divide in the island between those who were pro Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay’s investment and those against their influence.

The Barcley brothers have now displayed their true colours. Their behaviour has shown that you can’t buy democracy. Don’t rely on the Barcley Brothers as they are providing Sark with a false economy. Good luck, and long live Sark.

Good Luck & well done, Sarkees, you’ve had a lucky escape.
The Barclays bought Brecqhou and thought they could buy Sark. If they’d gained control of the Chief Pleas, what would stop them from making your lives so unpleasant that they drove out everyone they didn’t want or like, thereby making Sark their private island as they bought up more and more of your heritage?
Their tactics of using their Sark newspaper to try and get you to vote for their candidates and telling you who you should not vote for were despicable.
I’d be interested to know how many of those who have lost their jobs are Sarkees and how many of them have been shipped in by the Barclays.

We have visited Sark on numerous occasions over the previous 50 years and can claim to know it and its people well.

Thank goodness that the vast majority of islanders have seen through the mendacious and disingenuous behaviour of the Barclay brothers and given them the political bloody noses they so richly deserve.

It will be most interesting to see what bile now pours forth from the hand of the editor of the Sark News, Mrs S. Oliver.

    Well done, people of Sark!
