BEFORE yesterday afternoon’s announcement of the Barclays’ pull-out, Seneschal Reg Guille said there was no point in Chief Pleas rushing through further reform.
His role and that of the Seigneur are the subject of a legal challenge by Sir David and Sir Frederick.
The Court of Appeal in London has already ruled the Seneschal’s dual role as the president of Chief Pleas and the island’s main judge is not human rights compliant, but said any changes were for the new government to make.
‘There’s no point in Chief Pleas rushing to do something. They need to take a long, considered and measured look at what it is they want,’ said Mr Guille.
Even if the House of Lords overturned the Court of Appeal ruling on the Seneschal’s role, Mr Guille said that would not stop Chef Pleas reforming the position.
‘That’s a decision, that, as the judge said, should be left to the new Assembly.’
