Wages, accommodation and the future of Sark’s tourist industry were all on the agenda at an extraordinary meeting held last night by the Sark Chamber of Commerce.

It was in response to the week’s events and open to members and anyone who had been directly affected by the Barclay Brother’s withdrawal from Sark.

Three main subjects were on the agenda – concerns over wages and employment, the position with former employees’ accommodation and the long-term affects on Sark for 2009.

‘We have an immediate problem and an ongoing one which is: what is going to happen next season?,’ said Peter Tonks, chairman of the chamber. He said it was actively working towards resolving all three of these issues.

‘On one hand, we are celebrating democracy and on the other hand we are dealing with all of this. We want to bring a little bit of calm to the situation while the facts are still coming out.’

There are, apparently, only three things that can be seen from space. One is the Great Wall of China, the other’s are both De Launey’s and Dawes’ sense of self importance. Both staggeringly sated on Barclay’ wealth and patronage

Sark will survive. They have the support of the other islands.

I think it’s very sad that some of the folk of Sark are falling out with each other and being openly hostile towards shop owners etc without provocation. As Sark people they should be better than this and rise above it and stick together.

Well said Bethany and Jackie’s reference to Mr. Dawes actions in all of this read true as well!
