Serious mood at meeting

0640841.jpgABOUT 75 people attended an extraordinary meeting organised by the Sark Chamber of Commerce at the Bel Air Inn yesterday.

It was open to members and anyone who else had been directly affected by the Barclay brothers’ withdrawal of their investment in the island.

‘I think it’s fair to say that the mood was extremely serious and there was genuine concern about will happen in the next month and into next season,’ said chamber chairman Peter Tonks (pictured).

There were three main topics on the agenda – concerns over wages and employment, the position with former employees’ accommodation, and the long-term effects on Sark.

‘We have an immediate problem and an ongoing one – which is what is going to happen next season,’ said Mr Tonks. The meeting agreed that a bulletin board be placed in the main store in The Avenue. One side will feature the skills of people seeking work and the other a list of people who are able to provide it.

Bob Parsons is looking after it. He can be contacted on 83 2855 or on 07781 121 773. Fellow chamber council member Paul Burgess will help put people with money worries in touch with Sark procureur Sheila Guille. Mr Tonks said all calls would be treated in the strictest confidence. Mr Burgess is available on 07781 115 167.

All this talk of how greedy sark is by excepting the Barclays money, and now they chase them out of Sark – blah!blah! blah!.

Sark could not stop the sales from going through. They had to accept that the barclays wanted to have some property on Sark, like anyone else wanting to buy property on sark.

It isnt illegal to own property on Sark, why should they stop people coming to purchase things.

what they didnt expect is the fact that the Barclays wanted ultimate control over their island. Which must be pointed out- they are not local and therefore have no rights to change anything about the island.

And no I am not a uk hater- as Im from the uk my self but have lived in Guernsey most of my life. Because of this I wouldnt dream of changing Guernsey Law- you move somewhere new you adapt to the place and its people not the other way round. If you dont like the laws put in place move.
