‘Millions invested? We’re out of pocket’
Wednesday 17th December 2008, 1:00PM GMT.
SARK’S authorities have rejected claims that the Barclay brothers have benefited the island to the tune of a £5m. investment.
Seigneur Michael Beaumont (pictured) issued a statement yesterday claiming the billionaire brothers’ involvement in Sark had actually cost the island money.
The statement leaves Brecqhou in little doubt that Sark’s authorities are not prepared to back down in the post-election row which has seen the brothers cease capital investment.
It said the authorities wished to correct certain figures relating to the Barclays’ pull-out.
‘Of the claimed £5m. investment, there is little evidence of it in Sark. On the contrary, the authorities believe the island has been financially disadvantaged by the manner of their property transactions, in their tax avoidance schemes and in defence of their legal suits.
‘The Sark authorities consider the reaction to the democratic will of the people unacceptable and while having the greatest sympathy with all those affected, particularly that this should have occurred at this time of year, remain determined not to be intimidated.’

I think that Mr Beaumont maybe going blind. I would have thought that he would be able to see the renovated buildings on the Avenue. For instance where the Book Shop and French Liaisons sit now, used to be the old run down bike shop building.

I think the Seigneurs’ eyesight must be failing. The Avenue has been cleaned up and the addition of new toilets was definitely an improvement. I assume these will be closed now.
Also the improvements to the two big hotels could only have been a good thing. There are none so blind as those who will not see.

Hardly costing 5m though to refurb that particular area mentioned.
All the last year has read is one thing after another re the brothers and their legal suits, it perhaps would not take much to see that in fact more has been spent then received. I also recall the very low prices payed for properties and being suprised at the time.

This is starting to look like a farce.
The Barclay’s could never have got a toe hold on Sark without the nod from those who are now protesting about their unwanted advances.
The Sark Grandees are behaving like jilted lovers…one way or another they’ve courted the Barclay’s, whispering sweet nothings in their ears, selling them land and businesses whilst all the time they had no intention of staying faithful. Once the Barclays realised this they left the marital home with all their possesions and a rather large dose of spite. The Grandees, left home alone, are now saying “well, we didn’t really fancy you anyway”
I can’t wait to see what comes out in the divorce proceedings but lets hope they can eventually reconcile, for the sake of the kids!

Does the £5m include the purchase of properties in Sark or just renovation etc ?

for those that cannot see it… there was work done at the avenue, the aval du creux hotel, dixcart hotel, dixcart bar ( now Hugo’s), dixcart cottage, the clos de pegane, the path to the pegane, clos de vaul(ongoing,i believe) , the large site at the end of the mermaid lane(#71!),the beauregard site incuding cottage, the back of the avenue was cleaned and re-seeded, there were any amount of plants and grass put down. not to mention the ongoing maintenance of the gardens and land on all of these properties.
you cant see it but i assume that the people saying they cant see evidence of investment are remembering our wages??(former wages!)
all of the businesses on the island are going to start feeling the pinch in the next few weeks cos there simply isn’t the same amount of free cash walking around anymore!

and while i’m on….. the majority of people claiming that we are better off now? they’re mostly the people that dont need to get out of bed in the morning and work.

So what they invested 5 million, it could be 5 billion but thats not the point. The point is they wanted to to dictate the out come of Sarks election. This is not about money it’s about Sarks democracy.

Mr Beaumont
Your bitter statements say it all actually. How stupid they are.
If you can’t see any evidence of money being spent take a walk in the place that you caim to love so much.
Whilst you are on your travels pop into Sark Shipping and ask them how healthy their accounts were. This was due to an ever increasing economy opening up with workers, supplies and materials being shipped on a regular basis. I bet they will tell you they are operating at a loss thanks to the the way things have turned out
You wish to discredit your neighbours whilst at he same time expecting the inhabitants to go without. These inabitants are going to start seeing you for what you really are.
How much tax and benefits in kind have you demanded from these indviduals then. I bet they should wish to know surely.
Before Brecqhou started their investment program the Island was looking shabby chic to say the least. Properties were decaying to the point that they were not easy on the eye.
The avenue looked like a classis shanty town like you’d expect to see on a cowboy and western television set. Lots of areas were falling into the hands of time without any maintenance program or money.
I put it to you that the real reasons behind the bitterness between Sarks elite is pig headedness, ignorance and a massive dollop of not cashing inn at what ever aveue your self fullfulling role dictates.
You wish to keep things how they have always been done. Very luxurious for you I’m quite sure.
Sark’s constitution is starting to change. Theirs no stopping it now for your information. The wheels are now in motion. Good for the inhabitants not so for you. You have to have winners and those that wish to tighten their belts as a direct result.
So Your having your gardens spruced up by the workers that were Sacked thanks to you and your self preserving elite. How very noble of you! How very pleasant as well though.
What are you, sorry I need a rephrase here. How much are the taxpayers paying to give your garden a make over exactly. Haven’t you already indicated that you may sell up? The logic is starting to add then isn’t it. Lovely.
I bet they aren’t getting a fraction of what they were. I bet all the other businesses have seen their profits going from strengtgh to strength on a weekly basis to crash doom and gloom?
Just like the good old days though eh. For youself and a few others thats for sure. But your roles are reducing all of the time.
Should the workers feel grateful to you for tossing them a bone. You’d hope so but I feel that the banter will start to lead towards some of the elect.
I wonder what modern democracy would allow the publics money to be spent on its elected officials property at a time of crisis?
Seems a bit strange to me. A bit of Sarks way of thinking on this one. Maybe you will be kind enough to answer my comments? I won’t hold my breath though.
Ask for the accounts fom Customs and see how healthy the taxable products have performed since the withdrawal.
In short ask all of people how the economy is now.
You moan about legal cost. Nobody asked you to spend their money fighting a losing battle which you must have known would fail.
You even have the arrogance to turn down the offers of charity from well meaning individuals that have a heart and wish to make a difference? Why exactly. You might not need it however I am quite sure others may.
Have you done much for the people in fact. I would say that you have been so wrapped up in your own endevours you have taken your eye of the ball completly.
People need to ask themselves why the divide is so wide on their little Island. If they then still wish to protect it then I would say they have more money than sense.

Paul
You are either in the pay of The Barclays or in fact you are they, as all your comments I have read are totally pro Barclays and anti Sark..
Your comment.
“The avenue looked like a classis shanty town like you’d expect to see on a cowboy and western television set ”
What you fail to understand is that is why I my family and many friends come to Sark each year.
Further comment by Paul.
“You even have the arrogance to turn down the offers of charity from well meaning individuals that have a heart and wish to make a difference?”
I agree they want to make a difference but ” Well meaning” and “have a heart” is certainly not how the islanders and the outside world see it.
I cant believe that the Barclay family are happy with the outcome of this situation and the contempt that many feel towards them, and in the spirit of Christmas wouldnt it be nice if they would just sit back and contemplate the situation, with a view to offering an olive branch of peace, and renegotiate a different outcome for the future of the islanders.
They have all the money they will ever need, but having the respect of others is priceless.
Sark is such a lovely island, and it is such a shame that there is so much unhappiness, and turmoil there at the moment.

I am most definately not in the pay of the Barclays nor am I them. The lifestyle would definately be a boost compared to what I am used too though. However who can’t grasp the fact that it is actualy the elected that have brain washed their own people for their own needs and purposes.
Whilst I agree many Islanders are feeling bitter and have every right to feel this way. They just appear to be channeling their anger and feelings in the wrong direction.
How do you feel about others that might wish to make Sark their home. If newcomers fall out with the way the inhabitants like things done. The next day your made to feel evil and have threats of nationalising your property. Or your peers coming up with a cunning plan to rip the investor off and pocket the proceeds.
Sarks reputation has been very badly damaged by all of this. Who could afford to invest good money in a place that is so in love with its nostalgic beliefs. Share them or else. Actualy only a fool would wish to.
People don’t become as wealthy as the Barclays by being billionaire fools. Some people have shown nothing other than contempt and hostility to people that wish to hand out and build up so much.
You can’t reason when any side is hostile and bitter. Its pointless.
As for the posts about Sark News. Nothing is shouted about from Brecqhou it is printed to allow people time to evaluate its contents.
I would suggest that the bigest news medium amongst Sarkees is their very own grapeine. The whispers are made from quarters where the people place to much faith and feel their peers know best.
The lawyers are needed due to the fact that the Island is so far into the dark ages it is drunk on its ability to do everything its own way. It may work for some but just is not legal in todays day and age.
The Sarkees are being stung quite hardly by those that give nothing back in return. The Sark Lark has been dealt with. Next it will be Sark in the Dark.
Message to the Sarkees I don’t wish to come across with a could not care less attitude. It is high time all of you tried a different frame of mind.
Ask yourselves how much of the Islands money has been spent fighting this lost legal battle? Was it money well spent then. Were you even consulted over it. Maybe it has came out of Mr Beaumonts pension plan?
I very much doubt it though. The sarkees need to ask themseles how much in total their elite is costing them on an annual basis. I have a good idea. As much as they can ge away with.
It is csting all of you residents. Just keep drinkig all in cos after all you have still got an place to live your simple lives.
Year after year you will see you social divide get bigger and bigger until you are mere Goats working for Peers that do all the thinking for you.
Good Luck

There is a very GOOD 2 page article written in The Times Newpaper by Simon de Bruxelles. The mind boggles. Is this what you and those living on the island wish for Sark??????????????

Lots of moaning above sounds like the Barclay PR machine…..lets face it the electorate made their attitude to their ‘benefactors’ rather clear….the Barclays may be billionaires but most people in Sark have interests other than piling up money, developing property and pushing themselves and their employees into places where they are really not wanted…..there are other things in life and that is what many residents like about Sark.I hear there are no obnoxious natives on Rockall….why not start an empire there?….not sure what the tax regime is there however!
