GUERNSEY looks set to weather the recycling market collapse because of the quality of materials collected.
UK prices for most recyclables have fallen sharply in recent months and some councils have begun to run out of storage space as materials are stockpiled until the market picks up.
Public Services has so far been unaffected and because recycled materials collected in Guernsey are considered to be of high quality they should still find a market despite of a general drop in demand.
Minister Bernard Flouquet (pictured) said that the fall in prices was expected to be a short-term fluctuation and would not detract from efforts to achieve the 50% recycling target.
‘The quality of our recycling is important. It has been consistently high over a number of years and that puts us in a strong position,’ he said.
‘Some UK local authorities have reportedly had problems finding someone to take their recycling. However, we have contracts in place. The firms that we deal with are far more likely to honour these agreements knowing that what we provide is quality material.’

i recycle everything religiously every week. if the states are making money out of this then id like that to be remembered should we run out of landfill and talks start over how much more were gona charge households for waste disposal!!!
I believe that people who dont recycle should be hit the hardest but on a communal estate such as mine then it would be hard to work out whos bin bag is who or indeed how much refuse each individual disposes of..
each house should leave outside their gate but when they have too many they dump in the flats communal pile and on one is any the wiser
Im all for awards for recycling and penalties when not. Lets face it to not recycle is just laziness.. If a charge was introduced then a lot more people would with fewer excuses
