Second Gatwick runway idea good for Guernsey travellers, say airlines

Their comments followed news that companies bidding to buy Britain’s second-largest airport have been secretly discussing plans to build a second landing strip.

It was the second boost for air travellers in two days after airlines suggested BAA’s sale of three UK airports could increase competition and drive down fares.

Flybe spokesman Niall Duffy said travellers could expect simpler trips abroad if the second runway were built because they would not have to travel between Gatwick and Heathrow.

‘It would unquestionably save them money and they won’t have to trek through the hell that is Heathrow,’ he said. He said Flybe was in favour of the idea.

Aurigny commercial director Malcolm Coupar doubted whether the extra runway would affect the island very much in terms of increasing services to and from Gatwick but agreed it could improve international travel.

If we are going to come anywhere near reaching CO2 emissions targets then building any additional runways should not be something that is even contemplated.

I am sure that those living in the Braye du Valle will be jumping for joy to hear about how much easier international travel will be as the water laps at their front doors. It’s about time each and every person in the UK started thinking about the consequences of their actions.

Make a worthwhile New Year’s resolution: buy local, cut down on unnecessary travel (both on and off island) and start thinking about making a difference, instead of making money.

Really? CO2 emissions? A new runway means less CO2 emissions because there is less travel between the two airports.

Doesn’t take a genius to work out which has a smaller carbon footprint, and to think the density of passengers on the aircraft will be increased further helping efficiency. It’s a no brainer, oh and if you are going to say the tendency for people to travel will be increased, just look at landsbanki.

Journalist Thom Ogier quotes “second landing strip”. Surely if they only build a landing strip and not a take off one then over a relatively short period of time there will be a build up of aeroplanes that have been able to land but not leave again.

Perhaps in these difficult times, some people need to look at ways of saving money?
