GE-backed firm is ahead in the generation game

0593518.jpgA MARINE power project backed by Guernsey Electricity has set a new benchmark and with it moved tidal power for the island a step closer.

The Marine Current Turbines SeaGen device this week generated at its maximum capacity of 1.2MW for the first time.

This is the most power so far produced anywhere in the world by a tidal stream system.

It is the first commercial scale tidal stream turbine and was installed in Strangford Lough, near Belfast, in May. Since then it has been undergoing its commissioning phase.

Guernsey Electricity is a minority shareholder in MCT and has been closely monitoring developments with the SeaGen project since its inception.

GE’s engineering director Steve Morris (pictured) said it was a significant milestone for tidal power which has enormous potential for the Bailiwick.

Congrats to Guernsey Electricity. This is a far more sensible and measured approach to tidal power generation than that chosen by our maverick little cousins in Alderney.
I fear the Alderney plans will end in tears. Far too many unknowns and promises, arranged far too quickly.
I see great opportunities for the right and proper professional developer. My question to the States: who owns the rights to the local seabed?

Tidal power seems such an obvious way to go given the geographics of Guernsey that has so much tidal movement. Hope there will be a positive outcome for Guernsey to this involvement.
