Islanders call for Primark to take over Woolworths store

Saturday 20th December 2008, 9:28AM GMT.

0683621.jpgA campaign has been launched for Primark to set up shop in Guernsey after Woolworths closes next week.

A Facebook group entitled Primark in Guernsey has been set up and hundreds of members have been adding their voices to the campaign.

Currently, 785 members are part of the group, which was set up by Carla Shaw.

The description on the web page reads: ‘I’ve seen a Jersey group like this and we need one too… let’s see if we can get more people in our group and hopefully someone will take note and we can get a Primark over here.’

However, members may be in for a long wait, after Primark confirmed it will not be coming to the Channel Islands.

‘There are no plans for the foreseeable future and that is looking some distance into the future,’ said a Primark representative. However, we’re not ruling anything out. We regularly get enquiries about when we will set up shops at various locations.’

I thought the cry was to keep things LOCAL?
Better if Creasey’s could double its size and range of goods, what a lovely department store that would make.

We don’t want Primark rubbish, their clothes don’t last 5 minutes.

Matti – I beg to differ. Some of Primark’s clothes are a bit tatty but I have one of their original fleeces which I have worn and washed for over three years and it is still in good condition. Cheap is not necessarily rubbish.

    Brilliant Idea!

I agree with you about Primark quality (or rather, lack of it!).

Why would you want to bring a store like Primark into the Island? Have you considered the human cost to producing those low cost items? The fashion, like the people who buy them are cheap cheap cheap. As Matti says – this is the ideal opportunity for a local firm to get in on the act.

Disposable clothing for chav’s and the workers who make it in the asian sweat shops are on about a fiver a month. Why on earth would this be good for Guernsey?
Lets have a John Lewis or a BHS…put the frighteners up Creasey’s/M&S!

One less store making profit whilst exploiting child labour in deprived countries is fine by me! I hate the thought of trashy cheap high street stores ruining our unique high street!

Sorry to disagree Matti but not everyone can afford to shop at Creaseys – especially if you give them more or less a monopoly on the island. There needs to be something for everyone and personally I think Creaseys have more than enough of their share of the Guernsey High Street. Some of the young people today dont really care if the clothes last only one season – thats the whole idea I think and probably why Primark are so popular.

If you can’t afford to buy from Creaseys, there are always the ubiquitous catalogue companys gagging for business. But there should be no place for Primark in Guernsey.

Woolworths has been great for children’s clothes, especially. There are tiny sections in Next and New Look, but apart from that every other shop in Guernsey caters for teens or older people. Frankly, I wouldn’t be seen dead in anything Creaseys has to offer. The granny sector is well and truly covered already – extended Creaseys would be a waste of space in my opinion. Clothes are so disposable these days anyway as fashions change so quickly. Somewhere cheap would be welcome.

I would like to see a Primark there simply to sap profits from other shops, of equal quality, of which have a much higher price, such as Burton’s or New Look. I disagree with the production methods of Primark, but it happens with mostly every clothing firm.

It would be nice to have a Debenhams, simply to champion Creaseys, I hate Creaseys!!!!

Yes, ex-pat, I know all that, but we already have the ghastly New Look for the kids and that new one,(Joy, is it?) as well as places like Shoestring and other small outlets around the island, which in my opinion are more than enough in the cheap clothing range. What I’m trying to say is that the character of Town is slowly being eroded and I’ve heard the comments of visitors as they walk up the high street and their disappointment at seeing the same old same old they get in their own towns. Creaseys have the chance to expland themselves into a fine store selling a far wider range of goods, maybe more middle price clothing and household gifts/items.

Bringing Primark to Guernsey would ruin business for all other clothing retailers here. Their prices are simply too cheap for others to match. I can guarantee they will never come to Guernsey, and probably not Jersey. The islands are just too small for such competition for prices.

Primark – can your conscience allow it. I cannot afford to buy cheap clothes which will not last made in backstreet workshops by children who should be at school.

Oh dearie dearie me! Replace one chav brand with another one! If you want to buy tat go to Pound World!! Primark is just the classic pikey village muck that Guernsey can do without. That beautiful, unique pedestrian High Street… and Primark. The product and brand stink of garbage. Surely if you are looking for a brand to fit the Guernsey population I would think a small Debenhams would be ideal, but then the population just doesn’t warrant the set up on a major UK brand in Guernsey. The ideal situation would be for a local retailer to speculate and go for it or to create some sort of local producers ‘mall’. The only good thing about the wonder of Woolies was the Pick and Mix. Maybe a massive Pick and Mix shop??? Mmmm nice.

Yet another generic store set to further tarnish Guernsey’s identity. Why not rename ourselves ‘Little Britain’ whilst we’re at it?

Bring primark over here and George at Asda, even F&F from tesco`s arent you all fed up of paying scandalous clothing and food prices, wasnt everyone up in arms when Mr T Scott had a monopoly! I have children who have their own children now and also i have a 4 yr old myself and apart from newlook there arent any clothing shops here, i have to go online at Asda order it to be delivered to a uk address then onto here or i have to pay extreme travel costs to get guernsey to get to Asda myself, then be faced with excess baggage charges, so yes its about time Primark and Asda came over here, i for one cant wait!

I feel that it would be nice for ALDI to stifle a lot of our supermarkets and show us islanders what value for money is all about.

They would be more than welcome to charge VAT cos we would see value for money like we have never known before.

We all need food and we always will!

Just a question….can someone explain how replacing Woolworths (a non-local company) with Primark (another non-local company) will help ruin Guernsey’s unique image? You’re replacing like for like.

Yes, well, Woolworths arrived in Guernsey when no-one’s mind was on the environment and the character of Town, our attractive features weren’t so appreciated back then and we were probably grateful to have a ‘modern’ shop. Little did we know we’d one day be swamped with ugly UK outlets.

Most Guernsey folk I’ve ever seen are far better attired and more stylish than the mainland folk. The reason for this must surely be that mainland folk prefer to waste money on clothes that they are induced to believe are fashionable yet such clothes in reality have as much style as a dog’s blanket. Believe me, I’ve shopped in Primark – God help me – and my contribution to landfill rose significantly. Cheap is cheap and even if they put the prices up, the poor little kids making this stuff won’t have better working conditions. Stop believing so-called fashion style will make you look better because it wont! Buy good quality clothes that actually fit and suit you and people will love you all the more for it!!!!

surely if primark moved over here and started paying high street rents then inevitably it would have no choice but to up its prices?

Quality or no quality surely the price would be passed to the consumer. We all know our rents and prices to buy are far higher than the uk
