Former president is guest speaker

FORMER South African president FW de Klerk (pictured) is coming to Guernsey in February.
The last president of the apartheid-era, who was heavily involved in ending the discrimination, is the guest speaker at Oak Trust’s 10th birthday celebrations at the OGH.
Executive chairman Mark Chasey said securing his appearance was a terrific way to mark the company’s 10 years in Guernsey and its recent move into new offices.
‘We are very excited about FW de Klerk because you don’t get people like that coming to Guernsey very often.
‘There is a lot of South African influence in the island and this guy gave up his career to make sure that there was stability in the state.’
Mr Chasey, a South African himself, moved to Jersey in 1997 where he worked for Ernst and Young, before leaving and setting up Oak Trust in Guernsey in February 1999.

de Klerk kept his personal thoughts on apartheid to himself…he had enough sense to realise that the African National Congress and the mood of the majority of the people in South Africa were a force too strong to ignore.
On the other hand Mr. Bernie, if he had been in de Klerk’s shoes would have ploughed on until the country suffered war and massacre.
No I don’t think Bernie will find de Klerk open to any of his bar-room jokes.
