The highlights of his season included a 13th scratch trophy in the Investec L’Ancresse Open, a 72 giving him his sixth win in seven years, and his ninth Butterfield Salver in 12 years thanks to two gross 70s.

And he finally achieved a long-time ambition in carding his first 63 as he regained a share of the L’Ancresse course record – set just a few weeks earlier by Garry McFarlane – in placing first in the Royal Guernsey President’s Prize.

Ever the perfectionist, the island’s best ever golfer felt he could have done even better.

‘At seven under [after 13 holes] I was hoping to do lower than 63,’ he said. ‘It was definitely on at that stage for a low 60 or even 60.’

He added: ‘I missed a few chances going out.’
