Money worries see more islanders reach for help

The Samaritans report an increase in distress calls because of the credit crunch. And the Citizens Advice Bureau says it is dealing with more people with financial problems.

Guernsey Samaritans fund-raising chairwoman Celia Allen (pictured) said the economic climate was taking its toll.

‘With the credit crunch, people are suffering even more from stress, worry about debts and relationship breakdowns possibly caused by it,’ she said.

She saw no early end to such problems, either. ‘We expect it to worsen as the credit crunch makes life more difficult for people.’

Islanders might be hit particularly hard because they were not used to financial worries, she said.

I particularly feel for those Guernsey residents who saved all their lives and placed their deposits with Cheshire / Landsbanki Guernsey Ltd. It has transpired that the largest group of savers were not international depositors but, rather, people living in Guernsey itself.

It is truly sad to see how little the States of Guernsey has done to rescue stricken savers. Contrast this with the Isle of Man, who have a much larger problem financially with Kaupthing, but who have pledged £150m of public funds and whose Government is working tirelessly with Alix Partners and others to arrive at an equitable solution.

Those are the true feelings of savers who have lost the majority of their deposits by trusting Guernsey. David and Stephen, please understand the feelings of savers and give us a break, for once, please.

The States of Guernsey should take the honourable course and arrange for stricken savers to be repaid in full via a loan from the UK, recovering the money from the Administrators, Deloitte, in subsequent years.

That is the only course of action that can restore the reputation of Guernsey’s international financial centre and, in the short term, rescue Guernsey residents who deposited their savings and their trust in their finance centre, their financial regulator and their Government.
