Shopping blitz beats the gloom
Wednesday 24th December 2008, 2:30PM GMT.
A last-minute shopping blitz by islanders put Town in better spirits yesterday.
Fears that the economy would lead to a bleak Christmas for retailers were eased by the rush.
Thousands of islanders flocked into the shops to find bargains for tomorrow’s big day.
And it wasn’t only St Peter Port that saw the benefits – shops around the island reported brisk trade and there were queues everywhere.
Chamber of Commerce retail sub-committee chairman Tony Creasey said that despite the tough economic times, shops have been full of people.
‘I think everybody realises that this year is much more testing then normal but, having said that, the shops have been doing quite well.
‘Retailers have reacted and there are plenty of reasons and offers for people to buy different gifts.’
