GUERNSEY’S first baby of 2009 arrived after a boost from some home-made curry.

Laila Rose Merrien was born at 8.44am on New Year’s Day to proud parents Sarah Barsby and Dave Merrien.

‘My brother-in-law brought round his home-made curry in the evening,’ said Miss Barsby. ‘Then it all started with a few niggles. I had actually been worried Laila would be late.’

The couple rushed to hospital at 10pm on New Year’s Eve. Laila was not due to arrive until 4 January but yesterday weighed in at 6lb 6oz.

‘She has been perfect,’ said Miss Barsby. ‘She’s very good, happy and quiet – and feeding well.’

The couple did not know in advance what sex the baby would be and were delighted that she turned out to be a girl.

‘It came as a total surprise,’ said Miss Barsby.
