‘THAT was the worst performance since I have taken over.’
That was Sylvans coach Clive Bateman’s frank opinion of his side’s dismal performance as they were dumped out of the FA Cup by an impressive St Martin’s side at St Peter’s on Saturday.
Despite being without cup-tied signing Billy Page, the visitors took a second-minute lead when a long Jamie Dodd throw-in bounced twice in the penalty area before finding the back of the net via an unknown head.
It was youngster Tom Jenkins who claimed it, although the vital touch may well have come from Chris Mauger.
Either way, Bateman said it was a goal ‘he would have been disappointed to concede in a Year 10 match’.
There was no doubting the validity of the second goal, though, but again the chance came through woeful defending.
Dodd’s overhead kick was dreadfully spilled by keeper Ash Williams and the resulting loose ball fell to Adam Heaume to bury home.
