BUISNESSES which import from France are at threat because of the rate of the euro against the pound.

Boulangerie Victor Hugo owner Reda Karim said the current situation was proving difficult for him and posed a serious threat.

‘The euro is the backbone to our business, because everything we sell here comes from France – all the raw materials, the authentic French flour, the specific cheeses, the pate, everything is particular and there is no alternative,’ he said.

Costs have gone up very fast, but he does not want to start overcharging people, he said.

‘It has gone up 30%, which in some cases translates to 700 euros more per pallet of ingredients – we can’t put up the prices like that so we have to absorb some of the loss from our profit.’

Mr Karim said he had tried to use produce imported from other places but it simply did not work with the sort of food his business makes.

‘Danish cheese is not creamy enough, others are OK but just not right, the English flours are not correct for baguettes – it is not to my taste so I don’t want my customers to have it,’ he said.

Find a solution or go bust. Basically the food served by the business is good but it is also at the luxury end of ones budget. A once in a while treat one might say.

Put your prices up and see much less trade as a result. Work harder and bring your prices down and your business will pick up.

You forget that Guernsey is a small place. You started off with a small shop in town that once was a Kev’s motor shack.

It folded and you turned it into a place that sold internet crap. Then you opened the first Boulangerie and since have opened two more.

I don’t think business has been all that bad then considering. What are you fishing for exactly? Sympathy or maybe a government bail out!

Forget it pal we are all thinking about ourselves at the moment. Sarnies taste so much better when they are a good few quid cheaper actually!

What are you angling for here exactly. The euro is stronger and the pound is weaker. However shipping costs have been reduced dramatically so I doubt you are out of pocket a great deal?

How about a personal responce then!
