Golliwog ‘joke’ no-confidence vote to go ahead

Thursday 8th January 2009, 2:29PM GMT.

0572500.jpgCRITICS of Deputy Chief Minister Bernard Flouquet’s refusal to resign over his racist joke are to press ahead with a vote of no confidence.

Deputy Leon Gallienne (pictured) has gathered the seven signatures necessary to get the issue debated and will continue the process after the code of conduct panel released a report which recommended that Deputy Flouquet be reprimanded for the racist ‘joke’ he told at a press conference in December.

‘It’s a pretty damning report, but unfortunately it does not say what the reprimand should be and in my view leaves it far too open,’ he said.

‘The report doesn’t bring the issue to a conclusion, so therefore I am still taking my vote of no confidence in the deputy chief minister to the States.

‘We need to put a full stop to this situation and the fact is, as States members, we should be held accountable for our actions. A slap-on-the-wrist reprimand would not hold Deputy Flouquet accountable for what he said.’

Deputy Gallienne said he could have gathered many more signatures.

    has this not died yet,
well over the top reaction for a very minor indescretion,in my opinion,
as a fan of jim davivson and such like, there is no real issue here except that of , “when will the world calm itself from this politically correct madness,
can you imagine the joke tree and its current growing market concerning the worlds credit crisis,
blame the ***** bloke ,he’s in charge etc,
the shooting of charles jean de menezes
mistaken identity for dennis de ******** possibly
come on you lot get a grip ,or look out ,there are banana skins stalking all of us out there,

    cheers

Mr Flouquet obviously knows that the States of Deliberation is fairly evenly divided on this issue or he would not have defied public opinion for so long.

Unfortunately, whichever way the vote goes it is going to look bad for Guernsey by demonstrating that a sizeable number of our elected representatives support the telling of racist jokes at official press conferences. The fact that Mr F may be a really nice man devoted to family and friends and with considerable administrative skills will be completely lost on non islanders.

Please, Mr F, resign before causing us any more embarrassment.

Is he doing ok? Not respecting the niceties of modern civilisation as a top ranking island representative doesn’t look ok to me. That and the rest of the ire he attracts.

You may think like that but I don’t. Flouquet obviously speaks for you, I find him offensive, more so for hiding behind belligerent pomposity.

As with oz’s assertion that rubbish jokes going viral is any indication of how a politician should act in public, well, I hope not, but gathering by the standard of the apologists it may be a hope too far.

Could i just say, that my thoughts on BFs acts in politics were not judged from my own viewpoint,
I dislike politics and do not vote, the comment I made was from my very basic knowledge of politics,in essence, if politics is front page news ,I skip to page 2 ,however, this skipping, did somewhat give me the opinion that BFs progression in politics, was one of the fastest through routes to senior positions that the states have had.I could of course be wrong, but,
I certainly did’nt put him where he is.

If the island on the whole are looking for perfection from their politicians?,surely only those with no detrimental characteristic crumblings when in contact with kryptonite should apply for the available positions,

TO ERR IS HUMAN fast r,

Overspend on so many states financed projects with public money?? those are the real issues that require action , surely?

States investment losses on bank colapses?

Public enthusiasm for special events to be brought to the island ,that seemingly do not recieve states support?

School closures against mass public support?

I do not like politics but,
I find the real jokes do not appeal to my particular sense of humour,if you see my meaning.

I presume you would be more in favour for things to continue as they are and will in due course be backing Hartley G Wog should he ever run for a place in the states.

comedy should I agree be left to comedians,,so why oh why do we have so many comedians in the states?

Use lihou Island as a prison site,
Lets have P plates after l plates
Lets ban smoking in workmens pubs , even though , the predominant customer base of these establishments are in fact smokers.

Ah yes ,I see it now , it all makes sense.

If you are perfect, you by right can offer up your perfect opinions .

You sir, probably have many coloured pencils for various occasions , I have one pen,one pencil ,both black.

minor slip of the tongue or massive slip and losses of public expenditures etc ??

    which one gets your vote,

    which one is the joke.

Politics Eh, courbuggerdameela , if them there ormeers ad legs eh,we’d never cetchum unless of couse we ad one of dem there fast roboats eh;-)
