Garland to be unveiled as ‘hero’
Saturday 10th January 2009, 9:30AM GMT.
DALE GARLAND will officially become one of Guernsey’s ‘sporting heroes’ next week.
The Great Britain international and Olympian (pictured) will become the 15th name to be inducted into the Guernsey Sports Commission’s hall of fame at next Wednesday’s annual Carey Olsen Sporting Achievement Awards night at Beau Sejour.
Steve Cram, who will be the event’s guest speaker, is well aware of Garland’s track exploits having commentated on many of them in recent seasons. He said the Guernsey star was highly thought of in British athletics circles. ‘From my own experience, Dale has been regarded as a valuable and very respected member of the GB team,’ said Cram.
‘He is seen as somebody who could rise to the occasion.
‘You want people who have the mentality to do that and from what I saw of him he had the right attitude. Obviously he is a very talented athlete.’
Stuart Falla, chairman of the Commission, said Garland’s entry into the sporting heroes list was fully deserved. ‘If you can’t induct someone after winning an Olympic vest when can you?’ he asked.
