Dyslexia is ‘not the invention of bad teachers’

0559818.jpgTHE founder of the Dyslexia Day Centre has criticised a Labour MP who said the condition did not exist.

Culture and Leisure minister Mike O’Hara (pictured), who set up the centre 21 years ago, said Graham Stringer’s comments defied belief.

‘There are over six million people affected by dyslexia in the UK. He should ask them if it is real or not. I cannot believe he came out with such statements,’ he said.

In a column for website Manchester Confidential, Mr Stringer said millions of pounds were being wasted on specialist teaching for a ‘false’ condition.

‘The education establishment, rather than admit that their eclectic and incomplete methods for instruction are at fault, have invented a brain disorder called dyslexia,’ said Mr Stringer.

Deputy O’Hara said the comments were an absolute insult and did not apply to the excellent teachers in Guernsey.
