THE chips are down on the Bridge following the closure of the North Side Fish and Chip Bar.

The tenants served their last fish supper at the weekend after failing to turn around long-term rent arrears.

In a statement yesterday the building’s owner, Guernsey Electricity, said Northside Foods Ltd had been behind with its payments for some time.

‘We have made considerable efforts to resolve this situation and we have given the company and its directors extended periods to rectify the matter. Unfortunately, they have not done so, so we are left with no option but to take back the premises.’

The chip shop, said the spokesman, will ‘regrettably’ remain closed until another tenant is found.

Yesterday signs were put up in the windows of the harbour-side shop, run by Paula Buensoz, informing customers it would be shut until further notice.

About time they shut them all! guerns being close relatives to the french you would have thought they would be able to cook .That statement couldn’t be further from the truth, they just haven’t got a clue. Who ever heard of a piece of fish in a wet blanket coz that’s what they all serve up. Heart Attack wrapped in the Guernsey Press LOL

im gutted to hear that northside has closed.

They were the only decent chippy on the island and paddy yes people should and can cook but sometimes a traditional british fish and chips in soggy paper is necessary. You wouldnt get much better quality than northside;)Now i have to get my food with stuff i dont want on it and undercooked chips should i feel like a quickie tea:(

Maybe with your amazing cooking skills you could open up a replacement for the fish & chip shops eh Paddy? Or would everyone die of food poisoning…..

I’ll give you a tip! Try Beatons. There fish & chips are far better. Their entire product range is a lot bigger and better.

The only bad point is their location. But this works well for them.

Sad to see the Northside closing….
Agree with Paul though, Beatons are excellent, as are the Chip Inn in Fountain Street. Location an issue there too but worth the hassle.

Nice to see the guerns biting hard as ever. There is a world outside your rock you know!! you dont even eat your own freshly caught fish, all your Cod Haddock Plaice Smoked fish is all imported as is most of your veg on your hedges!!!

    A few points…

Paddy – if you dont like the way we do things then feel free to go back to wherever it is you came from…

Beetons – nice but if you go at the time you would normally eat then you will be in a queue for about 30 mins!!

Chip Inn – Best you stop at Cherry Godfrey on the way for a loan!!

Rohais – soooooo inconsistant – very very nice one day & horrible the next!!

Unfortunately Northside really was the best… We live in St Martins & would regularly drive down to get some fish n chips…

The problem is – there are not many ‘good’ takeaways anymore… most are run using the cheapest ingrediants & are getting stupidly expensive! I went to one the other day & got charged £1.30 for a can of drink – Safeway do 6 litres of the same for 99p!!

If Northside goes for good then my chip eating days are sure to be over!!

paddy – many thanks for the information that there’s a world outside Guernsey. I always wondered where my English mother came from, or why when I got off the plane in a strange place they don’t say “eh” at the end of every sentence….now I am enlightened!
I think you will find that most people discuss their local affairs (e.g. chip shops) whether they come from a small rock like Guernsey, or a large city like London – that doesn’t mean they aren’t aware of the broader issues. True some Guerns are parochial but don’t paint us all with the same brush….such stereotypical assumptions demonstrate ignorance, a label you appear quite keen to pin on us.

I can go one better. I can remember when the drinks were served in stone bottles. Back then one could travel from St peters in a horse drawn taxi, have a fish n chip supper and go out on the lash, with a taxi back I’d still have change left out of a shilling.

    Happy days.

nice to see W H Bonney agreeing……paddy maybe you do sound as if your from off island and the comments u made about chipie food may make many think your a chef but even if thatrs true which probably it isnt, us guerns love our chippies and as W H Bonney said northside were by far the best.

and yes beetons does make you wait for ages and order everything by shouting over a crowd when you walk in…!!! not everyone’s idea of a good takeout

I will miss that chippie so much! I am scottish and it was the only place on the Island that i could get chips as good as back on the motherland! I did go to beatons but they had a horrid taste to them!!

Oh and note to Paddy! I cook fresh meals 6 days a week at home, but enjoy a nice little take away on a Friday night like most people.

Oh dear – what will the unemployed do for dinner now?
Maybe they will have to (god forbid) cook something?
Then again, I’m sure oven chips have come a long way since their inception.

Like your style Paddy – fun to see all the small minded Guernsey folk being defensive; they don’t understand tongue-in-cheek humour.

And it’s also funny to see everyone assuming Paddy is not a Guern? How you do all make assumptions…..

Ah free ‘batter bits’ and bean fritters used to be order of the day for this St.Sampsons Secondary pupil of the 80′s.

On a more recent return trip to Guernsey, I settled on the one at the bottom of Fountain Street, just once in a while. A lovely warm evening, stroll across the road to sit on the old granite slipway opposite the bus terminus. Watch the boats and people going about their business. Simple, cheap pleasure. Island life!

Northside good chips,Beetons however serve excellent chips, even if you do have to wait abit.Maybe the electricity price increase has been caused by the failure of one business to understand the simple principle of business which is to pay all of your overheads first. Its a shame to see it go.

Never under-estimate the power of the ubiquitous chip and battered fillet of fish. Just like the RNLI they are a national institution.
The Northside chippy has clearly suffered from an unprovoked case of assault and battery!
Thankfully the genre is not dead. Other fine purveyors remain.

The one thing that won’t be missed is all the polystyrene boxes that end up littering the streets and marina. Hopefully now there will be less of them.

It is in fact possible to use takeaway boxes that look and feel much the same, but are made out of compostable materials such as sugar cane, bamboo or straw. They would cost a few pence more but would be less of a nuisance when not disposed of properly. They are available on the island already… it just requires us as consumers to ask for them.
